  • Winning Teams in Baseball & Business: Core Players

It is a summer weekend and you may be thinking about the great American past-time: baseball. Take a moment or two and check out new research comparing winning baseball teams and winning business teams that got my attention. It could help your local little league team and your small business team too! It seems some very smart professors have found that winning in business and in baseball requires teams be built around key players on the team. In fact, researchers find that baseball teams investing in highly skilled pitchers and catchers, whom they consider “core role” players, enjoy greater success. This model, they say, also translates to business work teams, which should be constructed around strategic core role holders rather than individual characteristics. Teams are generally thought of as a group of individuals working together to achieve something of value, whether it is the goal of a baseball team to win games or a business team put together to help the organization be competitive. Teams are very much a part of organizations,” says Stephen Humphrey, an assistant professor of management at Pennsylvania State University’s State’s Smeal College of Business. He cited a 1999 study that found 50 percent of business organizations employed teams in a meaningful capacity and “given what we have learned in the intervening years, the use of work teams has become even more prevalent.” ...
  • What Do Office Supplies Say About Your Enterprise & Employees?

More small business employees are willing to spend personal money on office supplies and accessories that reflect their style and taste according to a new study out today. A scientific survey of over a thousand working adults reveals many workers believe a few stylish office accessories can have more impact than the latest fashion or business attire according to the M by Staples national survey. The online survey of workers who have their own dedicated workspace found more than half of workers reported that having stylish office supplies gets them noticed in the workplace. In addition, 81 percent of respondents indicated an increase in productivity when they are more organized and carry business tools that allow them to showcase their personality. Further, more than one-third of respondents believe having stylish office supplies is likely to lead to promotions and opportunities for advancement. The survey was conducted in association with the official launch of the new M by Staples collection of journals, notebooks, file folders, stationery, and business essentials such as binder clips, magnets and push pins Other findings include: When asked what is noticed first in business meetings, 82 percent of respondents first notice an office supply item such as a stylish journal, chic notebook, file folders, and pens, versus someone's shoes (18 percent). While U.S. workers agree that success is a matter of hard work (92 percent), a vast majority agree that success is also linked to perceptions created in the workplace (76 percent). More than half (51 percent) of U.S. workers believe dressing in business attire has no affect on their level of productivity according to the research from Staples. ...
  • Employers & Language Limitations

As foreign-born workers make up a larger share of the U.S. workforce, more employers will be dealing with language limitations. But a new survey by The Conference Board finds that a majority of employers are doing very little to overcome this challenge. "The future for many U.S. based companies appears flush with potential employees lacking English language skills," says Chris Woock, author of the report. "Whether and how companies choose to accommodate these workers could have significant impacts on the sustainability of success. Latest evidence suggests companies could do well to recruit and hire the best available talent, irrespective of their language limitations, and invest in language training." ...
