Need a flexible schedule? A sewing business can operate part-time or full time. People need sewing work done for a variety of reasons, including clothing that needs to be altered or tailored, clothing repair, custom-made clothing or items for the home like curtains, bedding, upholstery, etc.
You can set up shop in your own home with a basic sewing machine, sewing supplies and a telephone. It's also helpful to have materials on hand such as business cards, invoices and a brochure listing your different services.
Brochures are an easy way to advertise your skills to current clients. Take, for example, the man who comes to you for a zipper repair. He may never even think to ask you to sew his daughter's wedding dress. A brochure can come in handy.
You can work directly with clients and you can also sub-contract with clothing stores or tailors for additional jobs. No matter where you get your jobs from, start building a list of references. A successful sewing business can be built on referrals alone, not to mention referrals don't cost you any money in advertising.
