A Success Tip For Your Business and It Starts With Garbage -- Really!
Posted on: 03.29.09 by Susan Wilson Solovic
My husband's birthday was a few days ago. Someone sent him a card with a copy of "The Garbage Truck Theory." I have no idea who the original author is, and by no means am I trying to take credit for it. But in these tough economic times, I wanted to share it with all of you.
One day I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded and missed the other car by just inches. The driver of the black car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi drvier just smiled and waved at the guy.
So I asked, "Why did you just do that? That guy almost ruined your taxi and sent us to the hospital!" That's when my taxi drive taught me what I now refer to as "The Law of the Garbage Truck."
The driver explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, frustration, anger and disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they just dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well and move on. Don't take their garbage and dump it on someone else such as people at work, home or even those you encounter on the streets.
The bottom line is successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.
We all have enough stress in our lives, particularly now in this recessionary climate. You need to stay focused on the things that are important in your life. So don't let someone else dump on you.

Susan,
This wonderful story brought to mind one of my favorite books, The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz. Step #2 is don't take anything personally. Ruiz not only offers the advice; he provides the methodology for accomplishing the task.
Keep up the great work you're doing.
Best wishes,
